Missing Warden Chan

(In Loving Memory of Dr. Stephen Choi Lai Chan)

The members of Hornell Hall and Hornell Hall Alumni Association are deeply saddened by the loss of our longest serving Warden, Dr. Stephen Choi Lai Chan, who passed away peacefully on October 10, 2021. We express our sincere condolences to his family.

Dr. Chan served as the Warden of Hornell Hall for over 20 years, during 1975–1977, 1979–1980, 1981–1983, and 1986–2002. In 2002, he retired from the University of Hong Kong and took on the challenge of establishing the Arts and Cultural Education Programme at Hong Kong Baptist University. In 2013, eleven years after his retirement as hall warden, Dr Chan enthusiastically offered valuable advice and supported us in organising Hornell Hall’s 60th Anniversary Celebration events.  During his wardenship, Dr. Chan nurtured generations of Hornellians from different backgrounds, including ourselves, in many aspects of community living. Dr. Chan was instrumental in promoting educational and cultural activities, in particular, in establishing Hornell Hall as a key player in the local drama and theatre scene. As a hall for young boys, these sporting, cultural and social activities have offered generations of student members a balanced and fulfilling hall and university life.

Dr. Chan always cared for his students and was a steadfast source of reassurance, never failing to offer his inexhaustible help, guidance and advice to students any time they needed it. Those of us who were fortunate to experience his wardenship will never forget his kind and compassionate smiling face and his undying devotion and dedication to the development of Hornell Hall, making it a warm home with a unique culture and strong brotherhood among generations of Hornellians.

Warden Chan is our role model and we are still learning from his exemplary leadership and commitment. He has left our Hall a legacy that continues to resonate to this day. His love of Hornell Hall will be long remembered for generations to come.

Thank you, Dr. Chan, our longest serving Warden. You will be greatly missed!
